The cork is harvested from tree bark every seven years, without harming the cork tree.
Cork is a perfect raw material that no industrial or technological processes have yet been able to replicate. Here are cork’s key features:
- Excellent thermal & acoustic insulation;
- Impermeability to liquids & gases;
- Excellent elasticity, compressibility & resilience;
- Soft to touch;
- Cork tress & cork products absorb CO2
The eco-friendly process of cork harvesting enables the products to be made without the need for felling trees. This process doesn’t interfere with the delicate eco systems of the cork forests (also known as Montado forests), keeping the forests safe for their animal inhabitants. Montado forests play a vital role in the control of climate balance by absorbing a huge 32 million tons of CO2 each year. The harvested cork is still in fact a living material, which continues to absorb Co2 long after it has been harvested.
LIGA is a family business based in Cornwall championing sustainable, organic and local living. Jennie and David are committed and passionate about using sustainable materials in a creative way to make eco products affordable and usable for everyday living.
