Citric acid is a natural organic vegetable acid that occurs in nearly all fruits. It is fully biodegradable. It is one of the most widespread acids in the plant world. It can be found in almost all fruits, woods, funguses and even in tobacco. It plays a key role for the metabolism of all living organisms. The human body produces approximately 2g per day of citric acid and decomposes it again and again. It can be used for numbers of purposes: it is a food additive (E330), an additive in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals too, an acidulent in soft drinks as well as a pH regulator.
